The main project this semester is a Family Interview and Analysis paper. We will be working on this throughout the semester. There are four main parts: developing interview questions, conducting the interview, conducting the analysis, and submitting the paper. Altogether, these assignments will comprise 40% of your total grade.
For this analysis, there must be some element of difference between the family you interview and your own family (race, ethnicity, family make-up, religion, sexuality, etc.). To be able to conduct a full analysis, you must think about your own family first. Results will be written in paragraph format and the bulk of your paper should address the following issues, making sure to use course materials and cited outside resources where appropriate. Make sure to address each of the questions below in your paper.
1. Compare and contrast your own family profile with the interviewed family
Discuss general problems you recognize in your own family, then compare and contrast them with the family you interviewed.
Discuss specific ways that your family is similar to the interviewed family.
Discuss specific ways that your family is different from the interviewed family.
Bring in sociological theory. What is the best sociological theory to apply to studying the family you interviewed and why?
What dominant theme did you see from the course material or discussions that were evident in the interviewed family?
What did you learn about this assignment about families and how they vary?
Developing Interview Questions (5%): For this section, you will need to come up with ten interview questions to ask your interviewee. This does not include basic demographic questions, but rather focused, in-depth questions regarding family life. Developing these questions does not mean you have to use them in the interview. Often, interviews go in their own direction, so it is up to you how structured you want to be.
Conducting the Interview (10%): This is where you will conduct the interview with your chosen family. You will submit a draft of the questions you asked and the answers you received. This can be in bullet form or written out. You do not necessarily have to use the questions you developed above, but you should ask at least ten questions and note which questions you’ve asked. Often, interviews go in their own direction, so it is up to you how structured you want to be.
Conducting the Analysis (5%): For this part, you will start thinking of themes and patterns that you see in your interview data. Is religion important to this family? Is it important to your family? What about race or family history? You will also come up with an appropriate sociological theory to integrate into your paper. This section will be turned in in a polished format. This means complete paragraphs integrating the concepts above and how they apply to your data.
This is where all your hard work this semester pays off. This is considered your final exam. In this section, you will take the elements of the previous sections, polish them and write them up. It can be in chapter format or as a continual theme, but all elements above must be mentioned. Paper requirements are below. Interview questions and answers have been uploaded as well as the necessary chapters to write the paper.
Writing the paper This paper will be 5-7 pages long (Times New Roman, 1” margins, double-spaced, with just your name in the upper left-hand corner – up to 5 points will be taken off for not following formatting guidelines). For each page less than the 5 page minimum, 10 points will be deducted from your final score. For each day your paper is late, 10 points will be deducted from your final score.
· Papers should be in paragraph format (no bullet points), at least 5 pages but no more than 7 full pages, and double-spaced.
· Any sources you use need to be cited appropriately both in the text and in the references section.
· Paper should have standard margins (1 inch) and font (Times New Roman 12)
